Stories abound about dedicated men of healing roused from their warm beds on cold winter nights to travel miles to stricken patients. After the turn of the century the era of the house call began to give way to more centralized care. On Victoria Avenue we find two of Shawville&#8217;s former hospitals. On the corner of Lang Street is the former residence of Dr. Powles who opened a hospital there in the 1920s. The large house on the north end of the street served as a hospital from 1938 to 1946. The days of the house call truly ended when the Pontiac Community Hospital opened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">Along with health care, education has been a large part of Shawville\u2019s past. The old Shawville High School, opened in 1913, educated generations of local people. Through recent renovations, the building has recaptured its former splendour. As apartments for the elderly, the old high school can now house those who once roamed its halls as students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">The impressive brick structures of the upper end of the street gave way to a section of town that was more industrial and commercial in nature. Hynes&#8217; Hall, one of several public meeting places in town, was on the avenue along with the movie theatre. For many years Rennick&#8217;s Blacksmith shop served the local farmers. Milk was brought into town from the surrounding countryside to be processed at the Shawville Creamery. One of the many sawmills that have been located in the village once turned out boards at the lower end of Victoria.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"key":"main_text_french","label":"Main Text (French)","value":"<p>Dans la tradition locale, peu de personnes au dix-neuvi\u00e8me si\u00e8cle \u00e9taient aussi h\u00e9ro\u00efques que le m\u00e9decin de campagne. Apr\u00e8s le tournant du si\u00e8cle, l&#8217;\u00e8re des visites \u00e0 domicile commen\u00e7a \u00e0 c\u00e9der la place \u00e0 des soins plus centralis\u00e9s. Sur l&#8217;avenue Victoria se trouvent deux des anciens h\u00f4pitaux de Shawville. Au coin de Lang Street se trouve l&#8217;ancienne r\u00e9sidence du Dr Powles, qui y ouvrit un h\u00f4pital dans les ann\u00e9es 1920. La grande maison situ\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#8217;extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 nord de la rue a servi d&#8217;h\u00f4pital de 1938 \u00e0 1946. L&#8217;\u00e9poque des visites \u00e0 domicile a pris fin avec l&#8217;ouverture de l&#8217;h\u00f4pital communautaire de Pontiac.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Outre les soins de sant\u00e9, l&#8217;\u00e9ducation a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le important dans le pass\u00e9 de Shawville. L&#8217;ancienne \u00e9cole secondaire de Shawville, ouverte en 1913, a form\u00e9 des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d&#8217;habitants. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 de r\u00e9centes r\u00e9novations, le b\u00e2timent a retrouv\u00e9 sa splendeur d&#8217;antan. En tant qu&#8217;appartements pour personnes \u00e2g\u00e9es, l&#8217;ancienne \u00e9cole secondaire peut d\u00e9sormais accueillir ceux qui ont arpent\u00e9 ses couloirs en tant qu&#8217;\u00e9tudiants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Les impressionnantes structures en briques du haut de la rue ont c\u00e9d\u00e9 la place \u00e0 une partie de la ville plus industrielle et commerciale par nature. Le Hynes&#8217; Hall, l&#8217;un des nombreux lieux de r\u00e9union publique de la ville, se trouvait sur l&#8217;avenue, tout comme le cin\u00e9ma. Pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, la forge de Rennick a servi les agriculteurs locaux. Le lait \u00e9tait amen\u00e9 en ville depuis la campagne environnante pour \u00eatre transform\u00e9 \u00e0 la cr\u00e9merie de Shawville. L&#8217;une des nombreuses scieries install\u00e9es dans le village produisait autrefois des planches \u00e0 l&#8217;extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 inf\u00e9rieure de
