The services of a farming village sprung up along that line. Taverns were among the first to arrive, while blacksmiths, coopers, tailors, and general stores came soon after. Shawville merchants developed a thriving trade by purchasing agricultural produce from local farmers and selling them consumer goods. The merchants then sold the produce to the many lumber companies that operated in the Ottawa Valley. The lumber companies usually paid in the hard cash with which the enterprising merchant could then use to buy goods from Ottawa and Montreal wholesalers. In this way the storekeepers of the village kept the local economy running.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: black;\">When the town was incorporated in 1873, Shawville was a thriving centre of more than a dozen businesses. The coming of the railway solidified the position of the town as the agricultural service centre of the region. Produce and livestock flooded into the town to be sent out by rail. The business of merchants, craftsmen, and millowners was greatly increased. Merchants brought goods in by the steel tracks. It was an exciting day when the year&#8217;s shipment of farm machinery and buggies and cutters arrived. Businessmen would parade their new wares through the streets of town, undoubtedly making customers out of the hundreds who came to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"key":"main_text_french","label":"Main Text (French)","value":"<p>Le village de Clarendon Center, qui deviendra plus tard Shawville, s&#8217;est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 le long de ce qui \u00e9tait alors la sixi\u00e8me ligne du canton de Clarendon. C&#8217;est ainsi que les commer\u00e7ants du village font tourner l&#8217;\u00e9conomie locale.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque la ville a \u00e9t\u00e9 constitu\u00e9e en 1873, Shawville \u00e9tait un centre prosp\u00e8re comptant plus d&#8217;une douzaine d&#8217;entreprises. L&#8217;arriv\u00e9e du chemin de fer a renforc\u00e9 la position de la ville en tant que centre de services agricoles de la r\u00e9gion. L&#8217;arriv\u00e9e de la cargaison annuelle de machines agricoles, de chariots et d&#8217;outils de coupe est une journ\u00e9e passionnante. Les hommes d&#8217;affaires faisaient d\u00e9filer leurs nouvelles marchandises dans les rues de la ville, faisant sans aucun doute des clients parmi les centaines de personnes qui venaient les voir.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ce fut dans les premi\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies pleines d&#8217;enthousiasme apr\u00e8s l&#8217;arriv\u00e9e du chemin de fer que le centre-ville de Shawville a acquis une grande partie de son aspect actuel. Pendant cette p\u00e9riode de prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9, de nouveaux b\u00e2timents ont \u00e9t\u00e9 construits, comme le magasin de G.F. Hodgins, qui est devenu le b\u00e2timent Stedman&#8217;s et, plus r\u00e9cemment, le Ch\u00e2teau Du Dollar Plus. Si vous regardez le deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9tage, le nom Hodgins est encore clairement visible. Le magasin W.A. Hodgins sur Main Street est rest\u00e9 dans la m\u00eame famille pendant plus de cent cinquante ans. Deux grands h\u00f4tels victoriens, le Pontiac House et le Russell House, \u00e9taient en concurrence f\u00e9roce sur Main Street. Malheureusement, ils ont tous deux succomb\u00e9 au feu.
