If the soul of the rural community lies within its churches, then surely it\u2019s heart is in its fairgrounds. In an agricultural community few events are anticipated as eagerly as the annual exhibition. The Pontiac Agricultural Society, established in 1856, held the first fair that year, giving the local farmers an opportunity to both show off their agricultural skills, and also to learn new farming skills and methods. With the addition of permanent grounds, permanent buildings, and a large dose of community spirit, Shawville Fair has grown into one of largest fairs in the region.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Before the fair became five days, it spanned only three. The event was also held later in September. So, occasionally the date would fall on the Shawville Lions\u2019 meeting night, which the Lions gathered in the Octagonal exhibition hall on the fairgrounds.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dale Thomson \u2013 at the time \u2013 87 years old – related one particular meeting that had some added entertainment because of the fair. \u201cThose days they used to have girly shows; strippers would come and put on a little teaser in front, and then they would go inside the tent. People would buy tickets to go in to see the full show. One of the girls was \u2018Satina, the Goddess of Fire\u2019. She would swallow fire and spit it out. She was introduced as being so hot she couldn\u2019t stay up in the Yukon. The lights were turned off and she began her performance. At one point, she takes a wobble, she might have had a drink too many, and one of the sticks that was on fire catches the plastic tablecloths. The cook ran out of the kitchen and got pails of water to put the fire out. It caused a hell of a commotion. It was priceless!\u201d chuckles Dale.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The construction of an indoor area on the grounds in 1913 caused great excitement in town. Shawville has a wonderful sporting tradition and the original arena and the present structure have been the site of many a memorable night. Also on the fairgrounds is Shawville\u2019s former train station. Moved to its present site in the 1970s, the station now preserves the past of Pontiac County as a museum.<\/p>\n"},{"key":"main_text_french","label":"Main Text (French)","value":"

Si l\u2019on retrouve l\u2019\u00e2me d\u2019une collectivit\u00e9 rurale dans ses \u00e9glises, son terrain d\u2019exposition abrite s\u00fbrement son c\u0153ur. En milieu rural, peu d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements sont attendus avec autant d\u2019impatience que la foire annuelle. Fond\u00e9e en 1856, la Societ\u00e9 d\u2019agriculture du Pontiac organisait au m\u00eame moment sa premi\u00e8re foire. Celle-ci fourait au fermiers locaux la chance de faire valoir non seulement leur comp\u00e9tence en agriculture mais aussi de se familiariser avec les derni\u00e8re d\u00e9couvertes reli\u00e9es au monde agricole. L\u2019acquisition de terrains, l\u2019ajout de b\u00e2timents permanents et la d\u00e9termination de la communaut\u00e9 ont fait de la foire de Shawville l\u2019une des plus importantes de la r\u00e9gion.<\/p>\n

Avant que la foire ne dure cinq jours, elle ne s’\u00e9tendait que sur trois jours. L’\u00e9v\u00e9nement se d\u00e9roulait \u00e9galement plus tard en septembre. Il arrivait donc que la date tombe le soir de la r\u00e9union des Lions de Shawville, qui se r\u00e9unissaient dans la salle d’exposition octogonale du champ de foire.<\/p>\n

Dale Thomson, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 87 ans \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque, raconte une r\u00e9union particuli\u00e8re qui a b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 d’un divertissement suppl\u00e9mentaire en raison de la foire. \u00ab \u00c0 l’\u00e9poque, il y avait des spectacles de filles ; les strip-teaseuses venaient et faisaient un petit spectacle devant la tente, puis elles entraient \u00e0 l’int\u00e9rieur. Les gens achetaient des billets pour entrer et voir le spectacle complet. L’une des filles \u00e9tait \u00ab Satina, la d\u00e9esse du feu \u00bb. Elle avalait le feu et le recrachait. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e comme \u00e9tant si chaude qu’elle ne pouvait pas rester dans le Yukon. Les lumi\u00e8res sont \u00e9teintes et elle commence son spectacle. \u00c0 un moment donn\u00e9, elle vacille, elle a peut-\u00eatre bu un verre de trop, et l’un des b\u00e2tons qui \u00e9tait en feu attrape les nappes en plastique. Le cuisinier sort en courant de la cuisine et va chercher des seaux d’eau pour \u00e9teindre le feu. Cela a provoqu\u00e9 un sacr\u00e9 remue-m\u00e9nage. \u00c7a n’a pas de prix \u00bb, s’amuse Dale.<\/p>\n

La construction d\u2019une patinoire int\u00e9rieure sur le terrain d\u2019exposition, en 1913, a \u00e9t\u00e9 la source de beaucoup de r\u00e9jouissances dans le village. Shawville affiche une longue tradition sportive et la patinoire originale, tout comme le terrain d\u2019exposition, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 le site de multiples soir\u00e9es m\u00e9morables. L\u2019ancienne gare de Shawville, d\u00e9plac\u00e9e sur le terrain d\u2019exposition en 1970, abrite le mus\u00e9e du comt\u00e9 de Pontiac.<\/p>\n"},{"key":"stop_Number","label":"Stop
