Religion has always been a very important part of life in Shawville. The spiritual nourishment of the population was seen to in pioneer communities almost as soon as the physical. The churches of town have provided the back bone of the community seeing to the needs of life: welcoming new members into this world, joining them in families, and seeing them off to the next world. Going to church was often a social outing for hardworking families who enjoyed the sermons and the chance to visit with their neighbours. The various denominations in town have gotten along admirably, pulling together when the occasion demanded. It is interesting to note that due to the original settlement pattern in the area, Shawville has no Roman Catholic church. This makes the town rather unique in the province of Quebec.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The United Church is a beautiful building of interesting architecture and as time would prove, sturdy construction. Before the union of 1925 joining Methodists,\u00a0Congregationalists, and most of the Presbyterians into the United Church of Canada, this was a Methodist charge. The Shawville congregation traces its roots back to 1834 when the Clarendon Methodist Circuit was established. The first Methodist church in the area was built in 1840. The present church, built in 1890 burnt in the terrible fire of 1906.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The fire of September 12th, 1906 broke out in a bakery in the west end of town. In a tragic twist of fate, most of the men in town had taken a special train to the Ottawa Exhibition that morning and were not present to help fight the flames. The fire burned so hot and created such a wind that it is said that pages from the hymn books in the burning Methodist Church were blown to the twelfth line of Clarendon, over six miles to the north. The naked church walls were among the only standing structures in that end of town to greet the men when they returned home from Ottawa.<\/p>\n"},{"key":"main_text_french","label":"Main Text (French)","value":"

La religion a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 un \u00e9l\u00e9ment tr\u00e8s important de la vie \u00e0 Shawville. Dans les communaut\u00e9s pionni\u00e8res, l’alimentation spirituelle de la population a \u00e9t\u00e9 prise en compte presque aussi t\u00f4t que l’alimentation physique. Les \u00e9glises de la ville ont constitu\u00e9 l’ossature de la communaut\u00e9 en r\u00e9pondant aux besoins de la vie : accueillir les nouveaux membres dans ce monde, les int\u00e9grer dans des familles et les accompagner dans l’autre monde. Aller \u00e0 l’\u00e9glise \u00e9tait souvent une sortie sociale pour les familles qui travaillaient dur et qui appr\u00e9ciaient les sermons et la possibilit\u00e9 de rendre visite \u00e0 leurs voisins. Les diff\u00e9rentes confessions de la ville se sont admirablement bien entendues, s’unissant lorsque l’occasion l’exigeait. Il est int\u00e9ressant de noter qu’en raison de la configuration initiale de la r\u00e9gion, Shawville n’a pas d’\u00e9glise catholique romaine. Cela rend la ville assez unique dans la province de Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

L’\u00e9glise unie est un bel \u00e9difice \u00e0 l’architecture int\u00e9ressante et, comme le temps le prouvera, \u00e0 la construction solide. Avant l’union de 1925 qui a r\u00e9uni les m\u00e9thodistes, les congr\u00e9gationalistes et la plupart des presbyt\u00e9riens au sein de l’\u00c9glise unie du Canada, il s’agissait d’une \u00e9glise m\u00e9thodiste. Les origines de la congr\u00e9gation de Shawville remontent \u00e0 1834, date de la cr\u00e9ation du circuit m\u00e9thodiste de Clarendon. La premi\u00e8re \u00e9glise m\u00e9thodiste de la r\u00e9gion a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite en 1840. L’\u00e9glise actuelle, construite en 1890, a br\u00fbl\u00e9 dans le terrible incendie de 1906.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

L’incendie du 12 septembre 1906 s’est d\u00e9clar\u00e9 dans une boulangerie situ\u00e9e \u00e0 l’ouest de la ville. Par un tragique coup du sort, la plupart des hommes de la ville avaient pris un train sp\u00e9cial pour se rendre \u00e0 l’Exposition d’Ottawa ce matin-l\u00e0 et n’\u00e9taient pas pr\u00e9sents pour aider \u00e0 combattre les flammes. Le feu a br\u00fbl\u00e9 si fort et cr\u00e9\u00e9 un tel vent que l’on dit que les pages des livres de cantiques de l’\u00e9glise m\u00e9thodiste en flammes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 souffl\u00e9es jusqu’\u00e0 la douzi\u00e8me ligne de Clarendon, \u00e0 plus de six miles au nord. Les murs nus de l’\u00e9glise \u00e9taient parmi les seules structures encore debout dans cette partie de la ville pour accueillir les hommes \u00e0 leur retour
