The present Anglican church was built in the 1870s through the hard work and dedication of the local congregation. The building is on the old Norman design, constructed of field stone, with a tower in front and a main entrance along the long side of the church. The Irish Protestant settlers in the area were quick to build a house of worship which originally stood across the street. The graveyard grew up around it. The cemetery is interesting in itself, containing some the earliest settlers in the region and many of the notable individuals who built the town. The graveyard reveals some of the hardships and tragedy of pioneer life, and life in the last century in general. A visitor will find whole families wiped out by disease, children killed by childhood sicknesses almost unknown today; young women taken far too soon in childbirth; young men felled in logging and farming accidents. On the other hand, the cemetery is a place of pride, for there lie the men and women who built the foundation of this Canada of ours. Here lies our heritage in the stones which tell of places far away; Ireland, Scotland, England.<\/p>\n

Along with the church and graveyard, an equally important institution to the early settlers, the school, was located near this site. The first school building, constructed in 1831, gave way to a frame structure in 1840. Eventually a sturdy two storey brick building would serve as the school on this site. Ever since 1851, when a high school district was established here, the institution was known as “The Academy.” Along with the country doctor, the school teacher of those days is remembered with great respect. Teaching was first the preserve of relatively educated men, but it eventually became an occupation for young women. Severely underpaid, these women worked in conditions that would test most people today. They taught a multitude of children many grades, all within the same poorly heated room. Often they confronted students older and much larger than themselves. Somehow, they persevered and generations of young people were educated by these dedicated women.<\/p>\n

L’\u00e9glise anglicane actuelle a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite dans les ann\u00e9es 1870 gr\u00e2ce au travail acharn\u00e9 et au d\u00e9vouement de la congr\u00e9gation locale. L’\u00e9difice est de conception normande, construit en pierre des champs, avec une tour \u00e0 l’avant et une entr\u00e9e principale sur le long c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l’\u00e9glise. Les colons protestants irlandais de la r\u00e9gion n’ont pas tard\u00e9 \u00e0 construire un lieu de culte qui se trouvait \u00e0 l’origine de l’autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la rue. Le cimeti\u00e8re s’est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 autour. Le cimeti\u00e8re est int\u00e9ressant en soi, puisqu’il abrite certains des premiers colons de la r\u00e9gion et de nombreuses personnalit\u00e9s qui ont construit la ville. Le cimeti\u00e8re r\u00e9v\u00e8le certaines des difficult\u00e9s et des trag\u00e9dies de la vie des pionniers, et de la vie au si\u00e8cle dernier en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Le visiteur y trouvera des familles enti\u00e8res d\u00e9cim\u00e9es par la maladie, des enfants tu\u00e9s par des maladies infantiles presque inconnues aujourd’hui, des jeunes femmes emport\u00e9es bien trop t\u00f4t en couches, des jeunes hommes tu\u00e9s dans des accidents d’exploitation foresti\u00e8re ou agricole. D’un autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, le cimeti\u00e8re est un lieu de fiert\u00e9, car c’est l\u00e0 que reposent les hommes et les femmes qui ont jet\u00e9 les bases de notre Canada. C’est l\u00e0 que se trouve notre patrimoine, dans les pierres qui parlent de lieux lointains : l’Irlande, l’\u00c9cosse, l’Angleterre.<\/p>\n

Outre l’\u00e9glise et le cimeti\u00e8re, une institution tout aussi importante pour les premiers colons, l’\u00e9cole, \u00e9tait situ\u00e9e \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de ce site. Le premier b\u00e2timent scolaire, construit en 1831, a c\u00e9d\u00e9 la place \u00e0 une structure en charpente en 1840. Par la suite, un solide b\u00e2timent en briques de deux \u00e9tages servira d’\u00e9cole sur ce site. Depuis 1851, date de la cr\u00e9ation d’un district d’enseignement secondaire, l’\u00e9tablissement est connu sous le nom d'”Acad\u00e9mie”. Au m\u00eame titre que le m\u00e9decin de campagne, l’instituteur de l’\u00e9poque est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 avec beaucoup de respect. L’enseignement a d’abord \u00e9t\u00e9 l’apanage d’hommes relativement instruits, mais il a fini par devenir une profession pour les jeunes femmes. S\u00e9v\u00e8rement sous-pay\u00e9es, ces femmes travaillaient dans des conditions qui mettraient \u00e0 l’\u00e9preuve la plupart des gens d’aujourd’hui. Elles enseignaient \u00e0 une multitude d’enfants de diff\u00e9rentes classes, tous dans la m\u00eame pi\u00e8ce mal chauff\u00e9e. Souvent, elles \u00e9taient confront\u00e9es \u00e0 des \u00e9l\u00e8ves plus \u00e2g\u00e9s et beaucoup plus grands qu’elles. D’une mani\u00e8re ou d’une autre, elles ont pers\u00e9v\u00e9r\u00e9 et des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de jeunes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9es par ces femmes d\u00e9vou\u00e9es.<\/p>\n
