Boiling Water Advisory Protocol

🎯 Purpose

To ensure the health and safety of all Shawville residents by providing a clear, timely, and consistent response when a Boil Water Advisory (BWA) is issued, including ongoing communication and public awareness throughout the advisory period.


🔔 1. Notification of a Boil Water Advisory

How Residents Will Be Notified:

  • Telematik Alert System
    Immediate alerts sent via phone, text, or email to all registered residents.
  • Municipal Website – www.shawville.ca
  • Boil Water Advisory page will be updated regularly.
  • Official Facebook Page
  • A notice will be posted immediately and updated at least once every 2–3 days, or more frequently if new information becomes available.
  • Chip FM

Notification may be sent to local media depending on the severity and duration of the advisory.

  • Door-to-Door Notifications or Signage

Used when the advisory affects specific areas or in cases where digital communication may not reach all residents.

💧 2. What Residents Should Do During a Boil Water Advisory

Until officially lifted, all water used for the following purposes should be boiled for at least 1 full minute:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Making infant formula
  • Washing fruits and vegetables
  • Preparing food or beverages
  • Making ice

⚠️ DO NOT use unboiled tap water for any of the above purposes.

✅ Tap water may be used without boiling for:

  • Showering and bathing (avoid swallowing water)
  • Laundry
  • Cleaning (excluding food preparation areas)

📆 3. Ongoing Communication During Advisory

To keep residents informed and reassured, the Town of Shawville will:

  • Post updates at least once a week on the website and Facebook page, even if no new information is available, to confirm the advisory is still in effect.
  • Issue a reminder via Telematik every 3–5 days for prolonged advisories (if still active).
  • Clearly communicate any changes, progress on testing, or estimated timelines for lifting the advisory.
  • Ensure all messaging is consistent across platforms and updated immediately when test results or advisory status changes.

🧪 4. Lifting the Advisory

The Boil Water Advisory will remain in effect until:

  • Water sampling and testing confirm that the water supply is safe for consumption, in accordance with public health regulations.
  • The advisory is officially lifted by the appropriate public health or municipal authority.

Residents will be notified through:

  • Telematik alerts
  • Website and social media
  • Local media, if necessary
  • Signage removal and/or door-to-door updates, where applicable
