Garbage and Compost Costs

In the 2025 calendar year, the Municipality of Shawville paid $135,306.33 to have our residual garbage sent to landfill. At a cost of $284 per metric tonne, that represents 476.4 metric tonnes of annual waste.

Recovering just 40% of that tonnage as compost in our brown bins, would represent 190.56 metric tonnes being diverted away from landfill.

Currently, that 190.56 tonnes is disposed of as garbage at $284 per tonne, which the cost to Shawville is $54,119.04. However, if the same material was processed as compost at $119 per tonne, the cost would be $22,676.64.

That represents a savings of $31,442.

This is just one of the incentives that Shawville Council has implemented, while trying to get the best value from our tax dollar. With landfills in Quebec running out of space, the provincial government has been pushing MRCs and municipalities to implement recycling and compost programs. Thank you for doing your part!
