To Amend By-Law 432
Concerning Fire Permits


WHEREAS the council of the Municipality of Shawville deems it advisable to amend By-Law number 432.

WHEREAS Councillor Julien Gagnon gave a notice of motion at the Council meeting held June 25, 2024, to amend bylaw number 432, Concerning Fires and this will also include the changes to the provisions of Contained Fire Pits with A Protective Screen-In Appliance.

THEREFORE, the Council of the Municipality of Shawville amends By-Law number 432 as follows:

WHEREAS contained fire pits will have permit requirements with inspections by the fire chief of the location and condition of the screened-in appliance are mandatory.

WHEREAS a house inspection (i.e. smoke alarms) is required before the permit is issued for the fire pit.

WHEREAS the volume of material burning shall change to material not exceeding 0.25 m3 (dimensions: 76.2 cm x 72.6 cm x 45.72 cm in height), entirely enclosed under the spark arrester cover or screen.

WHEREAS the appliance location shall change to 4.57 meters (15 feet) away from any combustible materials, including buildings, fences, trees, property lines, and roads.

WHEREAS the screen mesh must be small enough to act as a spark arrestor, with openings less than 1 cm. Only unprocessed wood, such as wood from tree trunks
or limbs is permitted for burning. The burning of leaves or other materials is prohibited.

WHEREAS the permit holder is responsible for any fire that burnt out of control. The total cost of extinguishing such fires will be charged to the permit holder. If fined, no future burning will be permitted until the fire chief deems all conditions are met.

By-Law Number 432-001 was read and adopted on a motion by Bill Hobbs, on this October 8th, 2024, and shall come into force according to law.
